Lactuca sativa

1000 seeds
This hardy 'cos' produces heads from March. Crisp, solid and full of flavour.
Cos or Romaine types are a little slower to mature than butterheads, with crisp, oval hearts.

Outdoors: sow thinly, August-April where they are to crop, 1.5cm (½") deep, directly into finely-prepared, fertile, moisture-retentive soil, which has already been watered. Allow 30cm (1') between rows. Sowings will benefit from cloche or fleece protectionand the young plants will suffer less damage. Seedlings usually appear in 7-14 days. Thin out to 15cm (6") apart. Water well until plants are established. Regular sowings, made every two to three weeks, will ensure a continuous supply. Harvest: March-July.

Genus: Lettuce

Botanical Name: Lactuca sativa
