Lettuce Gustav's Salad Seeds is a tender, melt-in-the-mouth butterhead variety cherished for its delicious flavour and smooth texture. This true Dutch heirloom comes from the southern isles, carefully bred to preserve its unique qualities. The story behind ‘Gustav’s Salad’ adds to its charm: Gustav, a local from the Southern Dutch isles, developed this special butterhead and became famous for delivering fresh heads by bicycle around his village. He saved seed each year to maintain and share his beloved lettuce, known locally as ‘Sla van Pa’ (Pappy’s Salad). With over 40 years of heritage, this variety remains a favourite for those seeking authentic flavour and heritage in their garden.

Sow outdoors sow thinly, March-August where they are to crop, 1.5cm (½in) deep, directly into finely-prepared, fertile, moisture-retentive soil, which has already been watered. Allow 25cm (10in) between rows. Early and late sowings may benefit from cloche protection. Seedlings usually appear in 7-14 days. Thin out to 20cm (8in) apart, transplant thinnings if required. Water well until plants are established. Regular sowings, made every two to three weeks, will ensure a continuous supply. Harvest: May-October.
